Project overview
As part of a larger grid modernization effort across PSE’s service area, we’re installing distribution automation (DA) equipment on most of the distribution circuits serving Bainbridge Island. DA equipment shortens outages for customers by automatically finding problems (faults) on the electric system, isolating them, and rerouting electricity to restore power to as many customers as possible.
DA equipment is integrated with an advanced software platform. Together, the equipment and software monitor the electric system and make automatic adjustments to minimize the number of customers affected by a fault. DA technology also gives our System Operations team increased visibility into the electric system to help their decision making when dealing with real-time situations. They can locate trouble spots more quickly and, sometimes, even eliminate the need for physical inspection.
PSE will install DA equipment at several locations around Bainbridge Island. At each location, it could take a few days to swap out a single pole and install reclosers on it. Then, relay technicians will program the equipment so it can communicate with the software. It should take a week or less to install and program each location. We may begin construction as early as 2027. We will share more details on construction timing and potential impacts as we progress through design.
In some parts of our service area, PSE has been using DA for about 10 years. Learn more about DA and how we’re deploying it across our service area here.
