Upgrades at Murden Cove Substation complete

Over the past year and a half, PSE has been working to upgrade our Murden Cove Substation, located on Sportsman Club Road NE, to improve electric reliability for Bainbridge Island customers. These upgrades support the new Murden Cove – Winslow 115 kV “missing link” transmission line and included installing a second transformer to provide electric capacity to meet the current and future energy needs of Bainbridge Island residents, businesses and Washington State Ferries.

We’ve completed all major upgrade work at the Murden Cove Substation. We’re now finishing some project close-out items, such as landscaping, and expect to have all work at the substation wrapped up by the end of the year.

PSE has now completed upgrades at two of the three substations on Bainbridge Island. In 2023 and 2024, prior to upgrading the Murden Cove Substation, we replaced aging equipment at the Port Madison Substation to improve reliability, better protect equipment and allow for remote control of the distribution system. To provide safe, reliable energy during construction, we are working on one substation at a time. Next, we will upgrade the Winslow Substation in coordination with the new Murden Cove – Winslow 115 kV transmission line. These substation projects are a critical part of our hybrid solution to increase the Island’s electric reliability and capacity.

We’re investing in a stronger, more reliable energy system and we’re grateful to the crews and teams out there every day with the expertise to support an increasingly complex energy system. It’s their hard work, problem-solving, meticulous attention to detail and commitment that powers this community.

PSE is proud to serve Bainbridge Island. Thank you for your patience while we made these important upgrades!
