The Rotary Auction and Rummage Sale on July 11
The Rotary Auction and Rummage Sale is a popular annual fundraiser organized and run by the Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island and over 2,400 volunteers. The sale has been held annually since 1960 and grossed more than $1 million last year alone. Net proceeds are distributed back into the community through grants, scholarships, and large-scale public projects.
In the span of only ten days, volunteers of all ages – many of whom have volunteered for many years – transform Bainbridge's Woodward Middle School campus into a vast marketplace where donated items are sold in some 36 departments. From fine antiques and furniture, to boats and jewelry, items are sorted, cleaned, repaired, priced, and organized in classrooms, under tents, in parking lots, and on the athletic field. The sale at the end of the week lasts only six hours, and thousands of happy shoppers go home with new treasures. After the sale, unsold goods are distributed to dozens of local organizations who can re-use them, with the goal of diverting as much as possible from the landfill.
