Preparing for wildfire season: Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS)

During wildfire season, PSE uses weather forecasting and modeling tools to evaluate conditions, and we may operate our electric system more conservatively to keep our customers and communities safe.

During high-risk weather conditions (hot, dry, and very windy), we may proactively turn off power, called a Public Safety Power Shutoff, to help prevent wildfires.

Here are some important facts about a PSPS:

  • A PSPS could be used anywhere when conditions present a public safety risk
  • These shutoffs could last several hours or several days
  • Customers are typically notified 48 hours in advance, depending on weather forecasts, and updates are shared at least twice daily
  • Life Support customers receive an additional phone call from Customer Care, notifying them of a PSPS
  • We’ll also share information on our outage map, website and social media channels, as well as through local news media outlets and emergency response partners
