Adding automation to restore power faster
As part of a larger grid modernization effort across PSE’s service area, we’re installing distribution automation (DA) equipment on most of the distribution circuits serving Bainbridge Island. DA equipment shortens outages for customers by automatically finding problems (faults) on the electric system, isolating them, and rerouting electricity to restore power to as many customers as possible.
PSE will install DA equipment at several locations around Bainbridge Island. At each location, it could take a few days to swap out a single pole and install reclosers (pictured above) on it. Then, relay technicians will program the equipment so it can communicate with the software used by our System Operations team. It should take a week or less to install and program each location.
We may begin construction as early as 2027. We will share more details on construction timing and potential impacts as we progress through design. Learn more at our project website.
