PSE signs agreement with Washington State Ferries on ferry electrification

On May 8, PSE signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Washington State Ferries (WSF) on ferry electrification. This partnership includes electrification of eight ferry terminals in our service area, beginning with the Bainbridge Island terminal. This work will support WSF’s transition to a hybrid-electric ferry system that will reduce greenhouse gases and improve local air quality.

“This MOU aligns with our Beyond Net Zero goals to decarbonize the energy system,” says Will Einstein, Director of New Product Development. “We want to help reduce carbon in other sectors, including transportation. We’re excited to sign the MOU with WSF and begin a long-term partnership to provide cleaner energy for our state’s ferry system.”

“With this partnership for the Bainbridge Island terminal and beyond, we’re on our way to achieving the 2040 long-range goal of reducing emissions by 90%,” says Matt von Ruden, System Electrification Program Administrator at Washington State Ferries. “We appreciate PSE’s commitment to this program because developing and implementing new technologies takes everyone working together.”

Thank you to everyone who has helped build this partnership. The next time you ride the ferry know that we’re moving to cleaner energy together!
