As part of an ongoing effort to improve reliability on Bainbridge Island, we’re planning to upgrade a section of the electric system. This project will take place along North Madison Ave, Day Road, and Northeast Valley Road and is currently in engineering status.
The upgrades include replacing several aging utility poles and replacing the existing electric wire with tree wire, where feasible. By installing tree wire in other locations, we’ve reduced power outages related to falling tree branches by up to 90 percent.
The project also includes a new section of underground cable along a segment of North Madison Ave. The underground design will improve electric reliability by adding redundancy to the system, allowing power to be restored quickly to more customers in the event of an outage by providing a third direct distribution feeder tie between Murden Coven and Port Madison substations.
Together, these improvements will make the Island’s electric system more reliable by improving system redundancy and reducing the risk of power outages from tree limbs.
Preliminary work for the project began in December 2020, and will continue through early 2021. Crews from PSE and our service providers are conducting fieldwork along the route, intended to inform the project design.
